Microsoft Clarity for AI Visibility: What It Shows and How to Use It

Microsoft Clarity is a free AI visibility tool showing real citations, crawler hits and grounding queries. How to set it up and read it.

Tanissh Amit

Microsoft Clarity is a free analytics platform that reports which AI systems crawl your site, which of your pages get cited in AI answers, and which questions those answers were built from. It reports citations observed in real AI responses rather than inferring them from simulated prompts, which is what most paid tools in this category do.

That is why I use it. This post covers what it measures, how to set it up, what each metric is good for, and where it stops.

Why traditional analytics misses AI visibility

Analytics measures visits after arrival. It cannot see what happened before the click, and increasingly the decision happens before the click.

If a buyer asks an assistant which agency to hire, reads the answer, and never visits your site, your analytics records nothing. You lost, and the log is silent.

The volume is still small but the direction is clear. HUMAN Security's 2026 benchmark report puts growth in AI-driven sessions at 3x during 2025, with automated traffic growing 8x faster than human traffic. Microsoft's own data shows AI-referred visitors converting at roughly 3x the rate of other channels.

What are grounding queries

A grounding query is a search the AI runs on your behalf. When someone asks an assistant a question, the assistant does not search using that question. It generates several of its own and retrieves against those.

Microsoft's worked example: a shopper types "what are the best running shoes for flat feet if I run on pavement?" Behind that, the assistant runs five searches nobody typed, including "stability vs neutral running shoes" and "cushioning for running on pavement". Each cited page in the final answer won a different background question.

This changes what a content gap is. You are not missing a keyword. You are missing an answer to a question the buyer never typed. Clarity's citations report lists those hidden queries with volume attached, which is the part I have not found anywhere else.

The three AI visibility reports

ReportAnswersUse it for
Bot activityWhich AI crawlers reach your site, how often, what they takeConfirming you are retrievable at all
CitationsWhich grounding queries ran and when your pages were sourcedDiagnosing why you appear or do not
Topic insightsShare of authority against named competitors, by topicDeciding what to publish next

The three metrics and what each is for

Share of authority. Of every source an AI leaned on for a topic, how much came from you. Watch direction, not the decimal. Moving a topic from 5% to 9% is the result. A single reading is close to meaningless: Ahrefs data shows roughly 45% of citations turning over every two days.

Answer contribution. How much of an individual answer your content supplied, rather than whether you appeared in it. Appearing and contributing 3% are different outcomes. When contribution is low, the fix is specificity. Numbers, ranges, conditions, direct comparisons. Vague content gets referenced. Specific content gets quoted.

Citation rate, split branded and non-branded. The most useful number in the product and the one most people skip. If you are cited when someone asks about your brand and absent when they ask about the problem, you are only reaching people who already know you.

Microsoft demonstrated this on themselves. In their own demo, Clarity was cited roughly 18,500 times across about 2,540 distinct questions in 30 days, and AI-referred visitors clicked the primary CTA at 9.41% against a 5.25% sitewide baseline. But around 60% of those citations came from branded queries, and their weakest area was category questions like "best heatmap tool". A Microsoft product is still mostly cited by people already searching for it.

How do you set up AI visibility in Clarity

Install Clarity one of two ways: enable it on your existing UET tag inside the Microsoft Advertising portal, or sign up at clarity.microsoft.com, create a project and add the tracking tag.

The AI reports then unlock separately, each with its own gate:

ReportRequirement
CitationsDomain verified in Bing Webmaster Tools or Google Search Console
Bot activityA supported CDN connected
Topic insightsYour own prompts and competitors defined

The third is not optional configuration. Default topics describe your category. You want prompts phrased the way buyers actually ask, and competitors you genuinely lose to, or share of authority is measured against the wrong market.

Six ways to use it

  1. Confirm you are retrievable. Check bot activity before commissioning content. If crawlers are blocked or timing out, publishing more is wasted spend.

  2. Build a roadmap from grounding queries. Take the questions where competitors are cited and you are not. Each one is a page you owe.

  3. Fix pages that get cited but barely contribute. Low answer contribution on a page you already rank for is the cheapest win available. Add the specifics.

  4. Track the branded to non-branded ratio. This is the honest measure of whether the work is reaching new buyers or servicing existing demand.

  5. Segment AI traffic behaviour. AI-referred visitors usually arrive with the comparison already done. They need confirming, not convincing: price, stock, shipping, proof. Clarity filters heatmaps and session replays by source.

  6. Separate page problems from traffic problems. Microsoft's examples are ordinary. Dead clicks on an upload control. A real price hidden behind a configurator. An offer below the point where most visitors stop scrolling. None of those are acquisition problems.

Where Microsoft Clarity stops

Citation data is grounded in Microsoft AI and select partner sources. Better than inference, and narrower than all AI search. Treat it as a strong read on part of the landscape.

Bot activity depends on a supported CDN, which rules out a lot of smaller sites.

Topic insights carries usage caps, in the region of 10 to 15 prompts per topic and a limited number of reports per week, so you cannot monitor everything.

The conversational analyst Microsoft previewed, Clarity Coworker, is not generally available. It is a waitlist.

None of that changes the recommendation. A free tool with real crawler logs and real citation data beats a paid tool running simulated prompts. Run it alongside Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, watch the non-branded citation trend, and ignore any single reading.

Frequently asked questions

Is Microsoft Clarity free?
Yes. The platform and the AI visibility reports carry no cost. Some reports require a verified domain or a connected CDN, but there is no paid tier.
Does Clarity track ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini?
Citation data comes from Microsoft AI and select partner grounding sources, so coverage is not universal across every assistant. It is a real sample rather than a simulated one, which is the tradeoff.
How is Clarity different from other AI visibility tools?
Most tools run prompts against assistants on a schedule and infer visibility from the responses. Clarity reports citations observed in actual AI responses and logs which crawlers fetched your pages.
How long before the data is useful?
Set a baseline in the first two weeks, then read it as a trend. Given citation turnover, a single reading tells you very little.
Do I need Microsoft Advertising to use it?
No. Advertising customers can enable Clarity on an existing UET tag, but anyone can sign up directly.

Before you install anything

Clarity tells you what happened on your own site. It does not tell you what an assistant says about you when the buyer never reaches your site at all, which is most of the time.

If you want that half of the picture first, Strategi runs a free AI visibility audit. We take the questions your buyers ask when they are close to deciding, run them across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews, and send you who gets named, where those answers were sourced, and what on your site is stopping it being cited. No purchase, and no call to sit through first.

Then install Clarity and watch the number move.
