What Is Google AI Mode and How Do You Show Up in It?
Google AI Mode explained: how query fan-out works, why 88% of citations sit outside the top 10, and what actually gets your business named.

TL;DR:
Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google Search that uses Gemini to break one question into multiple background searches and return a single synthesised answer with links to supporting websites. Google reported at I/O 2026 that AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch. Google's official guidance states that optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO, with no special requirements to appear. Yet Moz's analysis of 40,000 queries found only 12% of AI Mode citations match URLs in the organic top 10 for the same query. Both are true. Understanding why is the whole thing.
I am Tanissh, co-founder of Strategi. This is the honest version of how AI Mode works and what actually gets a business named in it, including the parts that argue against my own industry.
What is Google AI Mode?
Google AI Mode is a generative search experience built into Google Search that answers complex, conversational questions with one AI-written response supported by links to source websites. It runs on Gemini and sits alongside classic blue-link results rather than replacing them. That shift from a list you evaluate to one answer you receive is what changes the economics of visibility, because a list has ten slots and an answer names two or three.
The mechanic that matters is query fan-out. Google defines it as a set of concurrent, related queries generated by the model to fetch additional relevant search results beyond the one you typed. Ask about fixing a weedy lawn and Google may also run searches for herbicides, chemical-free removal, and prevention, then compose one answer from all of them.
The scale is no longer arguable. Google reported at I/O in May 2026 that AI Mode had surpassed one billion monthly users with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch, and in June 2026 that AI Overviews now has over 2.5 billion monthly active users.
Behaviour has moved with it. Google's own US data, published May 2026, found the average AI Mode search is triple the length of a traditional Search query, with planning-related queries growing 80% faster than AI Mode queries overall in six months.
Google says there is nothing special to do, and it names GEO directly
Most agencies skip this part. I would rather put it up front.
Google's guidance on optimizing for generative AI features, updated 10 July 2026, addresses GEO and AEO by name and concludes that from Google Search's perspective, this is still SEO. If the acronyms themselves are the confusing part, I set out what actually differs between them in our field guide to the terms.
The same document lists what you can ignore for Google Search:
llms.txt and similar files. Google states you do not need to create machine-readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear, because Google Search itself does not use them, and maintaining one will neither harm nor help your Google visibility.
Chunking content into fragments. Google says there is no requirement to break content into tiny pieces and no ideal page length.
Special schema for AI. Structured data is not required for generative AI search and there is no special schema.org markup to add, though it remains worth having for rich results.
Chasing inauthentic mentions. Google says pursuing manufactured mentions is less useful than it appears, because both its quality systems and its spam systems feed the generative features.
That is Google speaking about Google. It says nothing about ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude, which use their own indexes. But on Google's own surfaces, take it at face value.
Why 88% of AI Mode citations sit outside the organic top 10
Here is where "just do SEO" stops being a complete answer, and it turns on what a citation actually is in an AI answer: not a ranking position, but a source the model chose to name.
Moz analysed nearly 40,000 queries across desktop and mobile in the US and UK, published February 2026. Only 12% of AI Mode citations matched exact URLs in Google's top 10 for the same query. At domain level, only about one in five citations came from sites appearing in that top 10. Moz sells an AI visibility product, so weigh the framing accordingly, but the query volume and method are disclosed.
Moz also found AI Mode is citation-heavy rather than citation-light: 96% of responses included at least one citation, and 91% cited ten or more sources. Wikipedia was the most cited domain, with YouTube the second most cited external source, ahead of Reddit, Facebook and LinkedIn.
Both facts reconcile once fan-out is understood. AI Mode is not citing results for the query the user typed. It is citing results for the sub-queries the user never typed. Ranking still helps, and Moz found a higher rank raises the odds of citation, but even the number one result is cited only some of the time.
This matches what we see across Strategi's client work. The pages that get picked up by Google's AI surfaces are frequently not the pages ranking on the first page for the head term. They are the pages that answered one specific buyer question completely.
What actually gets a business named in AI Mode
Five things carry the weight. None of them are tricks.
One consistent version of the facts about your business, everywhere. AI Mode assembles an answer from many sources at once. If your positioning, service list and location differ between your site, your profiles and third-party listings, the model has no stable version to state.
Technical health that lets Google index you at all. Google is explicit that to be eligible for AI features, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Blocked crawling or unindexed pages remove you before citation is even a question.
Content that answers real buyer questions completely. Pew's analysis of 68,879 Google searches found 8% of one- or two-word searches produced an AI summary, rising to 53% for searches of ten words or more, and 60% for queries beginning with question words. Long, specific, question-shaped queries are where AI answers live.
Original data and statistics nobody else holds. Models cannot generate facts, they retrieve them. Publishing proprietary numbers makes you the named source for the queries those numbers answer, which is the most durable citation asset available.
Presence beyond your own domain. With YouTube, Reddit and LinkedIn among the most cited sources in Moz's data, a brand absent from those surfaces is absent from a meaningful share of answers no matter how the website performs.
The Search Console setting that can remove you entirely
In June 2026 Google began testing a Search generative AI control in Search Console that governs whether your site appears in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Discover. Sites that opt out receive no traffic and no impressions from those features.
Inclusion is the default for every property, so this is not a crisis. The trap is inheritance. Google's documentation states that a property inherits its control from its closest parent property that has configured one, meaning a setting applied at domain level propagates to subdomains without anyone touching them. Changes take effect within one to two days.
Worth knowing: Google's two documentation pages currently disagree on this. The AI features page, last updated 10 December 2025, says there are no additional technical requirements beyond indexing. The optimization guide, updated 10 July 2026, says a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible. Check the setting rather than the documentation.
How to measure AI Mode performance
Google now offers a generative AI performance report in Search Console covering AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date.
It reports impressions only. No clicks, no CTR, no position, and it is still rolling out to a subset of properties.
That limit is the point rather than a flaw. Pew found users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% where none did, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits. The context usually omitted: around two-thirds of all searches in that study ended without a result click either way. Note the vintage. That data covers March 2025 and measures AI Overviews, not AI Mode. No equivalent independent study of AI Mode click behaviour exists yet, which is worth knowing before anyone quotes you an AI Mode conversion rate.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Google AI Mode the same as Gemini?
- No, though they share the underlying technology. Gemini is Google's model family and standalone assistant app. AI Mode is a search experience inside Google Search that uses Gemini models while retrieving live results from Google's Search index. The practical difference for a business is that AI Mode cites and links to websites as part of the search experience, so your pages can appear inside it.
- How do I turn on AI Mode in Google Search?
- For most people it appears automatically wherever it is available. Google reported at I/O in May 2026 that Personal Intelligence in AI Mode was expanding to nearly 200 countries and territories across 98 languages with no subscription required, and that a redesigned AI-powered search box was rolling out everywhere AI Mode is available.
- How do I turn off AI Mode on Google?
- This is the single most common query in this cluster, and the answer is reassuring: AI Mode is a mode within Search rather than a replacement for it, so classic results remain available through the standard results tab and your search settings. Site owners wanting to remove their content from AI features need the Search generative AI control in Search Console, which is a separate thing entirely.
- Does llms.txt help me appear in Google AI Mode?
- Not according to Google, which states its Search systems ignore llms.txt and similar files and that maintaining one neither helps nor harms Google Search visibility. It may still serve other systems that consume it. Treat it as a nice-to-have, not a foundation. If someone is selling you AI visibility on the strength of a text file, that is worth questioning.
- Does ranking in the top 10 get me cited in AI Mode?
- It improves your odds without guaranteeing anything. Moz found 88% of AI Mode citations came from outside the organic top 10 for that query, because fan-out draws from related sub-queries rather than the one typed. Broad, deep coverage of a topic matters more than one high-ranking page, which is why topical authority beats a single strong asset. An AI visibility audit is how you find out which of your pages the engines are actually pulling from.
- Which model does AI Mode use?
- It changes often, which is itself the answer. Google announced Gemini 3.5 Flash as the global default at I/O in May 2026. By mid-August 2026, Google was rolling Gemini 3.7 Flash into AI Mode for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in English through a model picker, according to Search Engine Roundtable. Practitioners comparing the two on identical queries reported different top citations between models. A single audit captures a moment, not a permanent state.
- How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
- AI Overviews is the summary block that appears above traditional results on some queries. AI Mode is a separate conversational experience you enter deliberately, built for longer and more exploratory questions. Google says the two may use different models and techniques, so the links each shows will vary. In practice they are converging, since Google now lets a follow-up question from an AI Overview flow into an AI Mode conversation.
- How long does it take to appear in AI Mode?
- Most Strategi clients see visible movement within 30 days, because the first month front-loads structural work: technical architecture, unifying your information into one source of truth, closing content gaps, and publishing against the high-intent questions buyers actually ask. The starting position sets the pace. An established site with reasonable technical health moves faster than one starting from nothing. The mental model is simple. Ranking is a position you compete for on a page. A citation is a name you compete to have said out loud in a sentence. AI Mode decides which businesses get said out loud, and the way you win it is not a file or a tag. It is being the most useful, most verifiable answer to a question your buyer is genuinely asking. If you do not know whether Google AI Mode names your business today, that is the thing to find out first. Strategi runs a dated baseline across the engines your buyers use, shows you which answers name you and which name a competitor instead, and tells you what it would take to change that.
