How Much Does AI Search Optimization Cost? A 2026 Breakdown of Agency Pricing

Agencies charge $1,500 to $50,000 a month for AI search optimization. What drives the number, and what Strategi's plans include from $4,500.

TL;DR: Published pricing for AI search optimization agencies in 2026 ranges from $1,500 to more than $50,000 a month, and the guides disagree with each other by a factor of thirty-three. The Digital Elevator puts credible mid-market retainers at $2,000 to $10,000 a month, which is the tightest published estimate and the closest thing the category has to a consensus. Strategi's published plans start at $4,500 a month, billed monthly with no lock-in. The number on its own tells you almost nothing, so what follows is what drives it and how to compare two offers that look identical on paper.

Generative engine optimization, also called GEO or AI search optimization, is the practice of making a business visible in the answers produced by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. Agency retainers for it start at roughly $1,500 a month and reach $50,000 and beyond for enterprise programs, according to WebFX's May 2026 pricing analysis. Most credible mid-market programs sit in the $2,000 to $10,000 band identified by The Digital Elevator.

That is the answer. The rest of this explains why the band is so wide and what separates the ends of it.

Seven substantial pricing guides were published on this topic in 2026. They do not converge.

The lowest published floor is $1,500 and the highest published ceiling is $50,000. They disagree about the middle as sharply as the edges: LLM Pulse ends its full-optimization range at $5,000, which is exactly where Yes Optimist says the category begins.

Two conclusions follow. The category has no market price yet, so most buyers arrive with no reference number at all. And almost every guide published on what GEO costs is published by an agency that sells GEO, with its own pricing sitting comfortably inside the range it publishes. Strategi's own numbers below carry the same conflict of interest, which is why they are published in full on the pricing page rather than described.

Six variables account for the gap between a $3,000 retainer and a $12,000 one

Content volume. How many original pieces are produced each month. RevvGrowth's published tiers illustrate the spread: 10 articles a month at $3,000, and 40 a month at $8,000. Volume is the variable most agencies lead with because it is the easiest to count, and the least informative on its own.

Surface count. Whether each piece is published once on your own site, or rewritten for the other places your buyers and the engines read. A piece genuinely rewritten for a second surface is different work from the same piece cross-posted to it, and a large share of the price gap between agencies comes down to which of the two they mean.

Website content optimization scope. Whether pages that already exist get rewritten, and how many. This work is slow and produces no new URL to show a client at the end of the month, which is why it is frequently absent from cheaper scopes.

Technical program depth. Schema and structured data, metadata, internal linking architecture, crawler access and robots directives, page speed and Core Web Vitals, machine-readable files. Both a search ranking and an AI citation stand on this layer. Strategi includes it complete on every plan, including the entry plan, because content published onto a site an assistant cannot read properly is content that will not be cited.

Community and third-party sources. Reddit, industry forums, Q&A communities and review sites. These are cited heavily in AI answers, and the work is labour-intensive because most threads are not worth entering and the ones that are require someone with real knowledge posting under a real brand name with disclosure.

How the account is staffed. Whether one execution team carries your account alongside several others or carries yours alone. This is invisible on almost every published pricing page, and it is the largest single driver of turnaround speed and how specific the output actually is to your business.

Cost per content piece is the comparison that misleads buyers most

The usual way to compare two proposals is to divide the retainer by the number of deliverables. It produces a clean number and it points the wrong way.

At $4,500 a month for thirty pieces of work, the arithmetic gives roughly $150 a piece. At $10,000 a month for two hundred pieces, it gives $50. The second engagement is deeper in every respect that matters, and division makes it look worse.

The reason is that per-piece maths can only see the things that come in units. It cannot see technical work, because technical work produces no pieces. It cannot see whether a piece was rewritten for four surfaces or pasted onto them. It cannot see who is on your account.

Three questions separate two offers better than division does. Is the technical program complete on the plan you are considering, or gated to the tier above it? Does existing site content get rewritten, or is new content only added? And how many other clients does the team on your account carry at the same time?

What Strategi's three plans include at $4,500, $6,500 and $10,000

Strategi publishes its prices rather than quoting on request. Full detail is on the pricing page.

Foundation, from $4,500 a month. Ten content pieces published on your site each month, each rewritten for two further surfaces, giving thirty pieces of work in total. The complete technical program. Up to fifteen core pages rewritten from describing the business into answering something. FAQ content optimization, selective Reddit participation, a dated benchmark report and monthly reporting.

Growth, from $6,500 a month. Fifteen pieces rewritten across five surfaces, seventy-five in total. Website content optimization extends to forty pages. Reddit participation moves from selective to a full program.

Category, from $10,000 a month. Twenty-five pieces across eight surfaces, two hundred in total. Website content optimization covers the full site and runs continuously rather than in a single pass. Community work extends past Reddit into industry forums, Q&A communities and review sites. Monitoring moves to weekly.

The volume differences are the easiest part to describe and the least important. Below Category, a Strategi execution team carries up to three accounts. At Category it carries one, with always-on support and the turnaround speed that follows. That, rather than the jump from seventy-five pieces to two hundred, is what the price difference buys.

The three plans are configurations rather than fixed packages. A company that needs Foundation's content volume alongside site-wide optimization gets that built and priced against what is in it, rather than being moved up a tier for one line item.

Three factors decide which tier a business actually needs

How contested the category already is in AI answers. If four competitors are named every time a buyer asks an assistant about your category, more volume and more surfaces are required than for a company establishing a position where the answers are still thin.

How fast the industry moves. Software and technology companies almost always need the higher plans, because those categories are crowded and the set of named companies changes quickly. Industries that move slowly hold a position with less.

How much website there is to work with. A business running a lead-capture site with a handful of pages does not need full-site optimization, because there is no full site to optimize. Company size and target market matter here too. In real estate, a brokerage usually belongs on a lower plan while a developer does not. In industrial manufacturing, the lower plan is usually the correct recommendation, and Strategi says so on the audit call rather than after the proposal.

AI visibility tools cost $79 to $999 a month and do a different job

Tools are the other number sitting next to an agency retainer. Nutshell's 2026 cost breakdown puts Profound at $99 to $399 a month, Semrush at $117.33 to $499, Surfer at $79 to $999, and OmniSEO at $89 to $899.

They are worth having and they are not a substitute. A tool samples prompts and reports approximately where a brand stands. It does not rewrite pages, fix what an assistant cannot read on a site, produce anything, or enter a single thread. Strategi uses tools alongside first-party data from Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and Microsoft Clarity, and treats prompt sampling as directional rather than as measurement. Strategi's full position on where the tools stop is set out in this breakdown of the AI SEO tools available in 2026.

A tool tells you where you stand. A retainer is what changes it.

Five things worth holding any provider to at this price

A named month-one timeline. At Strategi, an onboarding call is followed by a knowledge bank that takes the client roughly four hours across the first week, and that is the bulk of what is asked of them. Website content fixes, technical optimization, new page creation and the surface-specific versions all begin in month one rather than in sequence. Movement is visible inside the first month, and ninety days is the point at which the compounding is worth judging. Microsoft Copilot typically picks work up first and the other engines follow.

Monthly billing and a clean exit. Strategi bills monthly, asks for two weeks notice, and delivers everything promised through to the end of the engagement including reporting. The content sits on the client's own site and brand accounts, so it stays with them and keeps working afterwards.

A stated position on the incumbent SEO agency. Strategi works alongside existing agencies and reviews their scope at the start so nothing is duplicated, requiring only open communication from the other vendor. Most companies consolidate onto one contract within a month or so, but that is their decision rather than a condition of the engagement.

Direct competitor exclusivity. Strategi does not work with a client's direct competitors, without exception. In AI answers there is usually one short list of companies per question, and taking both sides of a category would mean optimizing two clients for the same slot.

Honest measurement. The visibility worth paying for is visibility on the questions buyers ask when they are close to deciding, and which turns into visits and conversions. A large share of reporting in this category is built on prompts with no commercial demand behind them, which is how a provider produces impressive-looking gains on questions nobody is asking.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a mid-market company budget for AI search optimization in 2026?
Between $4,500 and $10,000 a month for a program that includes content production, website content optimization and a complete technical program. The Digital Elevator's 2026 guide puts the credible mid-market band at $2,000 to $10,000, and the lower half of that band generally buys monitoring plus a small amount of content rather than a full program. LLM Pulse prices monitoring-only retainers at $500 to $1,500 a month, which is a reasonable indicator of what the bottom of the market is actually selling. Below roughly $3,000 a month the technical work alone consumes a large share of the retainer before any content is produced, which is why programs at that level tend to be thin on surface area and slow to compound.
Is AI search optimization more expensive than SEO?
The retainers overlap almost entirely, which is unsurprising given how much of the underlying work is shared. Published GEO ranges of $2,000 to $10,000 a month for mid-market work sit in the same territory as established SEO retainers at the same company size. The meaningful difference is not the discipline but the scope: which content types are produced, what format they take, how the strategy is built around the questions buyers actually ask, and how many owned surfaces carry consistent information about the business. Any provider charging a premium purely for the change of label should be asked what specifically is different in the scope of work, line by line.
Can we run AI search optimization in house instead of hiring an agency?
Parts of it, yes. The technical work is a one-time job plus maintenance that a competent developer can execute from a clear specification. What is difficult to sustain in house is production across multiple surfaces every month, because it requires a writer who understands the category, someone who can enter community threads credibly under the brand name, and someone maintaining the technical layer as the site changes. Those are rarely the same person. The honest test is whether the work would survive a busy quarter, since content production is usually the first thing dropped when something urgent arrives. Tools at $79 to $999 a month, per Nutshell's 2026 breakdown, cover the measurement side of an in-house program but none of the production.
How long does it take to see results from AI search optimization?
Movement inside the first month and something worth judging at ninety days. The technical fixes land early and change what an assistant can read on the site, and content accumulates on top of that foundation, so a single month shows the structural work and almost none of the accumulation. Engines pick things up at different speeds, with Microsoft Copilot typically moving first and ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews following. Providers promising visible citation gains inside thirty days are usually describing prompts that had no competition on them to begin with.
Do GEO agencies guarantee that a brand will appear in ChatGPT?
Some do, and the guarantee is worth very little. AI engines are not directly controllable, their answers change frequently, and no provider has a mechanism to place a brand in a specific response. A guarantee is normally delivered by targeting questions with no competition behind them, which produces a citation nobody was ever going to read. Strategi commits to visibility on high-intent questions, meaning the questions buyers ask when they are close to a decision, and does not promise placement in any individual answer.
Why do so few GEO agencies publish their prices?
Because quoting on request allows a price to be set against a buyer's budget rather than against the work being done. The practical cost to the buyer is time: two or three calls before finding out whether the provider is even in the right range. Strategi publishes its plans in full so that a company for which $4,500 a month is not realistic can establish that in thirty seconds, and because a published number is harder to move once someone mentions the size of the marketing budget.
